GENTLEMEN, START YOUR ENGINES

Grain harvest is over. The crop is stashed mostly in huge granaries positioned along the railroad tracks. When the time and market are right the contents will be loaded and shipped. Now nearly every farm in the area has tuned up and lined up their trucks. Harvesting equipment both old-- and new-- has been prepped, tested and primed. The huge cellars have been cleaned out and the loading gear put in place. Hundreds and hundreds of acres of russet potato fields have been cleared of vines in anticipation of a bumper crop. Idaho Potatoes to fry, bake, hash, mash, shred, slice, freeze, and whatever else, will soon be on their way to restaurants and dinner tables of the world. Local schools will be dismissed for at least a week so students will be able to earn a little spending money working in the harvest.
Gentlemen, start your englines.

  2. I am going to go hunting and fishing during my week off from school. Great post and pictures that truly depict what has already started in the Rexburg area. Our potato harvest starts this next Friday for a week.

  3. SPUDNIK so clever! I would appreciate Idaho more if I could eat potatoes but I can't- flares arthritis, boo hoo. The equipment is so... manly! Those potaoes don't know what they are in for-pillage, plunder and off to the ovens...

  4. I never thought about what a big deal potato harvesting time is in Idaho. You make this all sound kind of fun. Kids out of school, a giant big truck rally, plus all those delicious potatoes to enjoy. Have fun!

  5. I really enjoyed this post! Of course our equipment is tiny compared to these. Farming is a big deal and seeing how others do it is fun.
