UP IN THE WOODS

A visit to the woods in the summer…

…is an opportunity to see the forest at its best.  

Even though the swarms of mosquitoes 

seemed to have been cross-breeding with piranhas.

It’s also a chance to photograph usual things…

 …like pussytoes.

Other unusual things such as…

…remarkable garb worn…

 …while learning the finer points of retrieving and folding the flag and…

 …an innovative use for…

 …tire inner tubes can be found at a place like a girls’ summer camp.

 Another less bizarre but very noteworthy activity 

was the tying of small quilts to be given to children 

in the pediatric ward at the hospital.

 Most of these young ladies were veteran campers 

so when we were invited to share their evening meal 

of foil dinners cooked over the coals…

 …we were glad to accept.  The main course of hamburger patty, 

sliced Idaho potatoes, carrots and onions was delicious.

 So was the fresh fruit.  Dessert was a cup of dirt.  

A Cup of Dirt is made by filling a paper cup with instant chocolate pudding 

and topping it with crumbs from crushed Oreos.  

A gummy worm is added as a garnish.

How many gummy worms can you eat at once?

 After-dinner entertainment was an array of fun skits.

 I’m sure you recognize the folk tale about 

the mouse pulling the thorn from the lion’s paw.

 There were stories…

 …and dancing…

…and more dancing.

Mosquitoes find moving targets more difficult to hit.
