I've been spending more time than I usually do at our local post office.
I'm learning about shipping prices and envelopes and overseas first class rates
since opening my Watercolor Painting Etsy shop. While I was getting ready to
send a painting to the U.K. other day I took a second look
at a sign that has been over the P.O. door for a very long time
and went, "hmmmmmmm." to myself.
When something is standing still, it's stationAry.
That piece of paper you write a letter on is stationEry.
Let the "E" in stationery remind you of envelope.
After working for several years at a wedding invitation printing business
I should have seen that one sooner.
oh UGH!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate to admit(and me a teacher and all) that I can never remember which ending it is on this word but now you have helped me! The other one I can't do is definite-is it ite or ate? I know it is ite but it never looks right-maybe that rhyme can help me!
ReplyDeleteOh and then there is dessert and desert-I know really but I have to think! Once saw fridge as frige-that made me smile.
ReplyDeleteuuuugh, i feel ya sister.
ReplyDeletei think we need spell check for when we leave comments, i always struggle with things like that. i know what i want to say, prefer not to appear stupid, BUT......
Welcome to my club! I'm president of the Grammar Snobbery club, and you can be an officer too. I hate, hate, hate to see cases of plenty of money being spent on making professional signs, but no proofreading in sight.
ReplyDeleteWell, that explains so much!
ReplyDeleteI hate leaving a comment and realizing JUST as I hit "publish comment"..I have spelling errors! Gah!
Oh that is sooo a mistake I would make. At least it is not glutten free candy.
ReplyDeleteI never noticed..but I will certainly bring it up to my local Postmaster as it explains some stuff about him:)
ReplyDeleteThe one I have to think about is principle and principal ...
ReplyDeleteStationary cards!! :-) I love it!
ReplyDeletePearl
I did not know that. B
ReplyDeleteThis might be my pet-est peeve in the entire universe . . . I can't believe it got past even the writer and the sign-maker and all million people who came through the door. But there's no getting past Leenie. Thanks for being on the job for all of us -- I sleep better knowing you're out there.
ReplyDeletelol! Having just been through a postal strike here, stationary would be totally right on for a few weeks. :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how we don't notice some things right away because I think we automatically read it and make it right?
I've never noticed that!
ReplyDeletehaving just read, again, Uncle Remus- I am not phased by written grammatical misspellings so much - listening to them is another matter.I have a friend who uses the worst grammar and misused words. It throws me off and i have to stop my brain from jumping in to correct her, because that is just SO obnoxious- It's the content of what she is trying to say not the correctness...I keep reminding myself...Good spotting on the sign- I would have doubted my own spelling because if it is on an important sign it must be correct!
ReplyDeleteI laughed so hard. It's an error many make. I guess we all have our words that make us wonder "is it an a or an e?"
ReplyDeleteBHAHAHA! Did you let them know! Gov'ment spellers! HA
