The idea is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month then carry it with you on Poem In Your Pocket Day, sharing it with co-workers, family, and friends.

OBJECTION SUSTAINED

Dressed all in organdy

Ribbons of taffeta

Color of burgundy.

Scrubbed ‘til her freckles

Shown bright in the sun.

Sent to a party

In shoes stiff and shiny

With hankie all lacey

In velvet purse tiny

“Don’t muss your clothes, Dear,

And have lots of fun.”

The party was, “Stupid.”

The same tailless donkey

Same cake and ice cream.

Boys acting like monkeys

Pulled on her ribbons.

But still she was good.

Then on the way home

She stopped by a willow tree

Hung up her ribbons

Took off the organdy

Shed patent leathers

And stomped in the mud.

KISS OFF

I must admit that you are popular.

They say you’ve got a lot of class.

But if all you want is to wrestle in the dark.

Honey, you can kiss my foot.

LOADED QUESTION

Not a hair of your head shall be lost

When you’re lifted up at the last day.

That is not what worries me most.

Will these pounds of butter all stay?

RED COAT

I lost my coat.

I borrowed one,

But it was red.

I hate wearing red.

I wore it to the store,

And on my way

I tripped on the sidewalk.

While I sat on the curb

A dog mistook me

For a fire hydrant.

I hate wearing red.
